Duncan Lewis, Mental Health Solicitors, Mental health provider hails success of independent living units

Mental health care provider Regard has opened the first of a series of planned units to help those with mental health conditions live independently in the community.

Online publisher EDP24 reports that one of the first new homes for mental health patients is situated at Gayton, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk.

One of the first residents is 22-year-old Frankie Hannant, who moved from children’s care services into the supported home at Gayton. He is now at college and is considering signing up for a further life skills course at a local college, as well as going on holiday.

Before moving into the home, Mr Hannant lacked living skills – and initially had two staff supporting him at his home. He has now become confident enough to live independently.

The homes are completely self-contained bungalows and Regard is planning more communities to provide independent living for those with mental health conditions across the UK.

Mr Hannant, from West Norfolk, said:

“I enjoy my new home and the independence I have.

“I have progressed well in college and received good reports – and my goal is to take a life skills course this year at the College of West Anglia. I’m also going to Center Parcs for a holiday.”

Gemma Watson – Regard’s care manager at Sail Close, where Mr Hannant lives – said:

“Frankie has progressed in all aspects of his care needs and development – and has achieved so many things in different areas.

“He now attends college three days a week without Sail Close staff, which is a fantastic achievement.”
