The Mental Health Act 1983 provides the authority in England and Wales to detain and treat people suffering from, or believed to be suffering from a mental disorder on a psychiatric unit without their agreement. A detained person is protected under the Act, and provided with certain rights, such as a right to challenge their detention in hospital.
