A man from Tottenham has been evicted from his flat after a local housing association found that he had not lived there for up to three years after previously giving a false name to sign up for the property.
Edward Antoine was booted from the one-bedroom flat in November when industrial and provident society, Circle Housing Circle 33, proved that he had actually been living in a house in neighbouring Enfield.
Antoine, who had been using the alias Edward Spence to trick authorities since 2010, was exposed as a fraudster after the social housing provider built a case from evidence gathered over a three-year period. It will now offer the flat to another person on the priority list for social housing in the area.
South Tottenham group area housing manager, Matthew Ostler said: “As well as defrauding the state, people who commit this crime are also denying deserving families from getting a home. With the help of other agencies, we work tirelessly to combat tenancy fraud and will always take action against those who abuse the system.”
Circle Housing Circle 33 has recovered in excess of 100 homes during the last three years as part of its ongoing crackdown on tenancy fraud. Offenders can now receive a two-year prison sentence and a fine after the Social Housing Fraud Act 2013 was passed in to law earlier this year.
