New figures published by NHS Digital have revealed that the number of GPs has fallen since NHS launched their 5-year rescue plan.
The five-year ‘GP Forward View’ plan, drawn up by health officials and published April 2016, pledged to meet health secretary Jeremy Hunt’s target of 5,000 extra full time equivalent (FTE) GPs by 2020. However, the new figures show a drop of 542 GPs since the publication of the plan.
Figures have also found that 250,000 patients have been displaced by closures of GP surgeries in the last year, with record numbers of closures being reported.
Findings of the GP Patient Survey 2016 demonstrated that patients are facing worsening access to their GP surgeries, with 18.1% of patients waiting over a week to see someone, and 11% failing to get an appointment.
