Hello, I’m Aina Khan. I am the Head of the Islamic and Asian division at Duncan Lewis Solicitors. I would like to talk to you about domestic abuse and the Muslim and Asian community in particular. Whether you’re a client, or an advice worker, or a social worker, or police, or even government or parliamentarian, you would be keen to know what the Muslim community feels and says about domestic abuse and whether it is something we can do something about together.

In my work over 25 years, in Muslim communities particularly, I’ve seen there is a lot of a lot of misinformation. People are being told to have ‘Sabr’ (patience) and put up with situations just for the sake of preserving the marriage. That is not Islam, it is cultural - and we need to make sure that we bear the difference in our minds, with British Muslims having an opportunity to have and practice the best of Islam in the 21st century in the UK. This also applies to foreign wives who are suffering domestic abuse, wives of British husbands. As long as there are British assets like a house here, you too can get my help and get justice and make sure you are looked after financially and your children do not suffer.

As for Islamic divorce, that’s an issue I deal with every single day. People call me and my team saying they don’t know if they’re legally married or legally divorced. I’m able to arrange English law to deal with all the issues and also to get an Islamic divorce.
