It has been reported that fraudsters have been garnering thousands of pounds from online gamers by tricking them into disclosing personal information. Thousands of Xbox Live gamers are believed to have been subjected to the scam in which fraudsters gain access into Xbox Live accounts and successfully attain details, including credit card numbers. Xbox Live gamers in the UK have allegedly lost, on average, £100 each. Officials at Xbox Live’s operator, Microsoft, have reportedly launched an investigation into the cyber thefts.
The fraudsters have been sending direct emails to gamers. Inside of these emails are links to bogus websites allegedly offering gamers free Microsoft points. These points are used to purchase games. Victims are requested to provide personal details that allow the fraudsters access to their accounts and their credit card details. The criminals withdraw small amounts from gamers’ credit cards over a period of several weeks. Gamers only realise that they have been subject to the fraud when their online gaming profile is “locked out” due to use by a third party. It has been reported that Microsoft will provide refunds to gamers who are able to prove that they kept their passwords a secret.
