Police have arrested two inmates of HMP Lindholme after a 22-year-old prisoner was found dead at the jail on Saturday (21/12/13).
The two men arrested on Saturday afternoon by South Yorkshire Police are aged 23 and 26.
A post-mortem was carried out on the victim on Sunday to establish the cause of death on Sunday and results are expected.
HMP Lindholme in Doncaster, South Yorkshire has been rated “very poor” by prison inspectors, who visited in June this year. They recommended urgent improvements be made at the prison – and Chief Inspector of Prisons, Nick Hardwick, said HMP Lindholme was one of the worst prisons he had seen “in many years”.
The prison is a category C/D men’s prison housed in a former RAF base. The prison opened in 1985 and has some inmates serving life sentences and others serving open sentences. The low-risk wing of the prison has been closed since the findings of the inspection.
HMP Lindholme prison has a capacity of 1,100 prisoners and only takes men over the age of 21.
The prison’s website claims that it has in place well-developed strategies to ensure a safe and supportive environment for prisoners.
The dead man’s family has been informed of his death.
