A four-year-old boy and his two-year-old sister were found walking along a busy dual carriageway barefoot as their parents slept. While vehicles swerved to avoid the pair, driver Linda Young, shepherded the youngsters to the safety of the side of the road. The boy, who had no shoes on, and his sister, who wore a dirty all-in-one suit, were caught on CCTV on the Tyburn Road in Erdington, just a few miles from Birmingham city centre. The children had made their way onto the busy road while their parents slept.
When the police were called to the scene, the boy informed police of his mother’s whereabouts but when she was contacted, the police received no reply. Police later visited the grandmother’s house, in which the family were staying overnight, to inform the parents of their children’s escape. On arriving at the property, police officers found the front door to be unlocked.
Officers found the property to be littered with empty aerosol cans, property of their father, a known solvent abuser. In the youngsters’ bedroom, police found food on the bed, along with liquid paracetamol. The parents admitted two charges of child cruelty. The father received an 18-week jail sentence, suspended for a year, and the mother received an 18-month community order. The children are currently under the care of social services.
