Stoke-on-Trent City Council has announced that young first-time buyers in Stoke-on-Trent are being given a boost onto the housing ladder, after the city was named one of 30 local authority partnerships to spearhead a national house building scheme.
Housing Minister Gavin Barwell has confirmed that 2017 will see the first starter homes to be built on brownfield sites across the country, including in Stoke-on-Trent.
First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40 will be able to buy a new home at a discount of at least 20% below market value.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has been working with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) since May 2016 and the city has been confirmed as a Starter Homes area, aiming to deliver 438 new homes. A total of 219 will be available with a Starter Homes discount.
The developments will be backed with financial support from the government’s £1.2 billion Starter Homes Land Fund.
Several sites in Stoke-on-Trent have already been earmarked for the scheme and the city council will continue to work closely with the HCA to identify and take forward further land opportunities for the fund.
The council’s Cabinet Member for housing, communities and safer city, Councillor Randy Conteh, said:
“It is fantastic news that we have been selected by the government to spearhead this scheme, as it helps us to deliver our Stronger Together priority of investing in homes and driving up housing standards.
“The Starter Homes programme will help young people get onto the housing ladder and secure their dream homes sooner – it will also support the wider growth and regeneration of the city.”
