A solider has died and another has been injured after a truck overturned at a military base in Cumbria on Wednesday (04/06/14) morning.

The incident took place at the Warcop Army base, near Appleby and it is reported the troops were injured when a military vehicle rolled over during a training exercise at the base – one soldier was pronounced dead at the scene and a 19-year-old was taken to The James Cook University Hospital by Great North Air Ambulance with injuries to his face, chest and back. His condition following the incident was reported as stable on arrival.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the fatality on Wednesday and added that the deceased soldier’s next of kin had been informed.

A third soldier was treated by emergency crews at the scene but was not taken to hospital.

The Eastern Daily Press (EDP24) reports that the solider who died has been named as Sergeant Mark Foley, aged 31, of the Norfolk-based Light Dragoons. The father-of-two had served in Afghanistan. He was originally from Hull.

The Commanding Officer of the Light Dragoons, Lieutenant Colonel James Senior pad tribute to Sgt Foley:

“Sgt Foley was an exceptionally talented, battle-hardened soldier who embodied everything that is good about our profession. A consummate professional, he delivered on operations time and time again, accumulating huge experience on the way.

“Always inquisitive and engaging, Sgt Foley was at the heart of everything his troop did, everything his squadron did, everything the regiment did – whether in the dust of Helmand Province or the troop store at our regiment’s home in Norfolk, he was the man people turned to for advice and guidance.

“Sgt Foley made an astonishing contribution to our regimental family, and his loss is a devastating shock.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and young family.”

An investigation into the incident by the Land Accident Investigation Team is is now underway.
