A mother found guilty of force-feeding her baby to death has received a three-year prison term. Thirty-one-year-old Gloria Dwomoh, a nurse from London, forced her ten-month-old daughter, named Diamond, to consume solid food from six months of age. Diamond died in March of last year. The Old Bailey was informed that the cause of Diamond’s death was pneumonia that resulted from food blocking her airways. Miss Dwomoh had always denied causing her daughter’s death.
The court heard that Miss Dwomoh was obsessed by her daughter’s weight. Andrew Edis QC, prosecuting, told of how Diamond’s food had gone down the "wrong way" for several months. Miss Dwomoh was accused of holding the spout of the jug that she was used to feed her daughter into the youngster’s mouth to stop her from closing it. During the trial, Miss Dwomoh had informed the court that she had fed Diamond in the same way that her own mother had fed her and her siblings in Ghana.
Judge Brian Barker claimed that Miss Dwomoh took away her daughter’s life and had caused her daughter “daily distress". Trevor Burke QC, representing Miss Dwomoh, informed the court that his client had received adequate punishment and reminded the jury that she had already suffered the death of her child.
