A judge who has jailed three men over sex offences in Ceredigion has spoken about his hopes that the sentences would serve as a deterrent in the event of a “cult of offending”. Judge Paul Thomas QC informed Swansea Crown Court of his worries over what he considered a growing culture in which some men in a part of Ceredigion sexually abused underage girls. Judge Paul Thomas QC recently handed Gethin Mitchell, of Aberaeron, and Joe Charles Taylor, of Lampeter, two-year jail terms in relating to sexual abuse. He also handed Evan Evans, of Llanybydder, a sentence of 18 months. All three men must remain on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and were handed a ten-year ban from working with children.
Judge Paul Thomas QC told of how the role of the court was to protect underage child from those who choose to exploit them. He claimed that underage girls were “easy prey for unscrupulous men”. He added that he had dealt with many cases of sexual abuse in the area and claimed that he trusted that the sentences that he handed to offenders would deter a cult of offending.
