A new study has found that Britain has witnessed an increase in ‘silver separations’. Pensioners proved to be the only age group in which the divorce rate is increasing. On approaching retirement, and with a lack of work routine, many over 60s have been coming to the realization that they no longer wish to stay with their partner. Some claim to have discovered that they have a lack of a connection upon their children leaving the nest. The latest figures have shown that in excess of 11,500 over-60s divorced their partners, an increase of four per cent in just two years. This is in contrast with a reduction of greater than 11 per cent in divorce rates across all age groups.
Ros Altmann, a director general for Saga, claimed that the figures offered proof that retirement was the start of a new phase in life for many over-60s. The statistics revealed that 11,040 over-60s divorced in 2007. This figure rose to 11,507 in 2009. An increased number of men over 60 were found to have divorced their partners. Amongst the male over-60s group, divorce rates were found to have risen three per cent in two years, while in the female over-60s group it increased by six per cent. Despite ageing women presenting a greater increase, overall, it was found that more men were getting divorced than women were.
