Authorities in Hull have launched an investigation into claims that the corpse of a man believed to have been buried almost ten years ago has been found. The man died while held in police custody. The man’s sister has told of how the family had felt “shocked and appalled” upon hearing the news. The council stated that a man’s body had been discovered in the city’s mortuary in a place where the body of a woman was thought to have been kept. Mr. Alder's family claimed that they were told that they had “buried the wrong body”. Mr. Alder died in police detention in 1998.
In a council statement, it was revealed that Mr. Alder’s body lay in the resting place of Grace Kamara who died in 1999. The council claimed to be unable to explain the error. In the statement, Hull City Council claimed to be “appalled and distraught” on learning of the error and stated that a thorough investigation has been launched into the mistake. A 2006 report conducted by the Healthcare Commission watchdog stated that both hospital staff and the police should have learned from Mr. Alder’s “tragic death”. The commission uncovered the failure of the hospital and the police to share information and urged for greater cooperation between the two. An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) report found four police officers to be guilty of a “serious neglect of duty” over Mr. Alder’s death. Mr. Alder had choked to death following his arrest at Hull Royal Infirmary.
