Campaign Group Generation Rent has withdrawn from the Homes for Britain campaign, claiming that the strategy to provide affordable new homes is “so flawed that it has to date undermined the interests of people suffering the consequences of the housing crisis”.
Social housing publisher 24Dash.com reports that director of Generation Rent Alex Hilton had already indicated his dissatisfaction with the Homes for Britain campaign – a cross-sector coalition to provide more homes – in an article for the online publisher.
In the article, Mr Hilton wrote that the Homes for Britain campaign’s “asks were not just weak, but allowed politicians too much political space”.
Later on social media Mr Hilton wrote:
“Homes for Britain seems to be undermining pro-housing campaigns. Please help us fix that.”
Mr Hilton later called for solutions to the housing crisis that are “significantly more timely than within a generation”:
“Today, we're very sad to say that we have to withdraw our support for the Homes for Britain campaign…We're not suggesting anyone else leaves the coalition, but we are asking signatories to work with us on a more effective, loose campaigning network, and to influence Homes for Britain so that it advocates solutions to the housing crisis that are significantly more timely than within a generation.”
The withdrawal coincides with the Conservative Party’s pledge to extend Right-to-Buy to housing association tenants if the party wins the General Election in May.
