A father and daughter died when the overcrowded Jeep they were passengers in crashed into a tractor in Turkey, an inquest has heard. Jonothan Pearce and his eight-year-old daughter, Charley, were partaking in a water fight with fellow holidaymakers when the incident occurred in August 2008. The open-topped Jeep, which was designed to hold only five people but was carrying 11, ploughed into a broken-down tractor carrying a trailer-load of bricks, throwing several passengers off the Jeep. Charley was killed instantly. Her father died on the way to hospital. Charley and her father were among passengers in four vehicles who had been provided with giant water pistols to squirt at each other during the journey.
The inquest was told that the Jeep in which the Pearce family was travelling was at the back of a convoy of other passenger vehicles. When the convoy came close to a broken-down tractor pulling a trailer of bricks, the other Jeeps pulled around the tractor but according to passenger Miss Dhillon, the driver of the final Jeep travelling did not appear to see the hazard. The driver than swerved suddenly to avoid the trailer but failed to miss it. She informed the inquest that her husband felt that the driver was not competent. The Turkish driver had informed investigators that two German tourists had thrown water into his face from the roadside. Black Country Coroner, Robin Balmain, told the court that it seemed that the vehicle was being driven “too fast in the circumstances without good reason”.
