The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) has announced that it is to continue a drive to tackle fraudulent compensation claims for criminal injuries, in order to ensure the protection of public funds.
The CICA says that, in the last 12 months, a number of cases have been referred to the police, after suspected fraudulent activity in claims for compensation were identified.
The referrals have resulted in prosecutions and other successful outcomes, including custodial sentences and community orders for those who failed to disclose convictions and/or submitted duplicate claims – as well as a suspended prison sentence for one claimant who provided false information.
A custodial sentence for misappropriation of an award of compensation was also handed down by the court to another claimant.
The CICA says it has updated its Customer Charter to reflect its commitment to tackling fraud.
Claims for compensation can be made under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme for injuries sustained as a result of violent criminal activities, such as unprovoked assaults and sexual and/or physical abuse, once a conviction has been obtained.
