Wigan Council is encouraging more people to feel comfortable with talking about domestic violence with a road show called “Sitting Right With You”.
“Sitting Right With You” is a Greater Manchester campaign, which is taking a different approach to domestic abuse by urging people to talk about what they think is and is not appropriate behaviour in a relationship.
The yellow sofa featured in the campaign will be in Wigan on Saturday, 10 December.
The road show offers the public the chance to talk about domestic abuse –
and question whether behaviour such as belittling a partner or isolating someone from their friends and family is acceptable.
Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, said:
“Domestic abuse can have long-lasting effects on victims and their families, yet many people may not even be aware that what they are experiencing is abuse.
“This campaign highlights behaviours that people may experience – or even display – that are signs of an unhealthy relationship, without having thought of the consequences.
“Hopefully, it will help people speak up and question what domestic abuse really is and whether things sit right with them.”
Around one in three women and one in six men experiences some form of domestic abuse, including controlling behaviour.
