Carmarthen Traders Fight Parking Meter Plans (3 November 2011)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Carmarthen Traders Fight Parking Meter Plans

Businesses in a Wales town are fighting new plans to install parking meters on a busy town centre road. They claim that the plans to charge people for parking near to the shops would drive customers away and hence, would negatively impact their business. Plans to install parking meters on the road have been met with rejections twice before. Business owners have grouped together to oppose the plans proposed by Carmarthenshire council. The council accuses motorists of abusing free parking on the road by leaving their cars there all day. It claims that the installation of parking meters would free up parking space for prospective customers.

The Lammas Street Trader's Group believes that the introduction of parking charges would catastrophically impact their businesses. At present, cars are granted the freedom to park on the street for a maximum of 30 minutes without charge. Clive Scourfield, an executive board member for Carmarthenshire council, claims that the authority would consider the traders' concerns. He added that the aim of the parking meters would be to enable more cars to utilise the parking facilities and effectively increase visitors to the street.
