Cambridge City Council has announced that two sites are to be developed to provide new council homes pending planning permission.
A site at Queen’s Meadow in Cherry Hinton ward would see three one-bedroom flats built – while the second site at Hills Avenue in Queen Edith’s ward would see a new three-bedroom council house built.
The sites are attached to existing council homes and councillors are due to discuss recommendations for progression of the two schemes at a Housing Scrutiny Committee meeting on Tuesday, 20 June.
The council says the proposals are part of an ongoing programme to develop housing on a number of small sites owned by the council, including garages and garden areas at other council-owned properties.
The council has built 213 new homes since 2010 – and a further 141 will be completed in 2017.
As part of the recent devolution deal for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, the city council negotiated a grant of £70 million from the government to build new council homes.
Part of this grant – along with Right To Buy receipts and a percentage of council reserves – will be used to fund these two and future projects.
Executive Councillor for Housing, Councillor Kevin Price, said:
“Proposals like these in Cherry Hinton and Queen Edith’s – and similar projects on small parcels of land – aim to make the most of various council-owned sites by building attractive and sustainable new council homes.
“Providing more council housing to help meet the high need for affordable homes in Cambridge remains a core priority for the council in the face of ongoing pressures, such as high market rents and the government’s Right To Buy scheme.”
