I am a Solicitor in the Housing department based in Duncan Lewis Solicitors' City of London office.

I work as a part of the Housing Team and am instructed on a variety of publicly and privately funded housing matters including claims for possession, landlord and tenant disputes, applications for eviction, suspension of warrants for possession, housing disrepair, unlawful evictions, harassment, homelessness reviews, homelessness appeals in the County Court, and applications for judicial review. I have considerable experience dealing with cases ranging from small claims matters to complex multi-track cases, and matters which haven been determined by the Court of Appeal. I regularly assist as a Court Duty Adviser and advocate on behalf of clients at the County Court.

I have been fortunate enough to volunteer and support Help for Southall Street Homeless (HSSH) which is a homeless charity set up to assist rough sleepers who suffer with various medical needs and/or substance abuse issues in Southall (West London) and the neighbouring arears. I have also been fortunate enough to volunteer with CRISIS at Christmas and assist homeless people in London over the Christmas period. I believe this has allowed me to develop my ability to work with and assist some of the most vulnerable people in society, and has helped me act on behalf of vulnerable and high risk clients.

I am committed to promoting access to justice, in particular to those who are the most vulnerable within society. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone should be is entitled to receive clear legal advice and assistance regardless of their social or economic circumstances.

Notable Cases

Court of Appeal
  • Khan v Mehmood [2022] EWCA Civ 791- Junior Solicitor- the Court of Appeal held that an award for general damages against a landlord who breaches a repairing covenant should be increased by 10%, thus upholding and confirming the principle as set out by the case Simmons v. Castle [2012] EWCA Civ 1039.

  • Metropolitan Housing Trust Limited v TM [2021] EWCA Civ 1890- Junior Solicitor- the Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the County Court and High Court to award an order for possession against a seriously disabled adult living in supported accommodation. The Court of Appeal’s decision addresses the question of retrospective compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) in housing possession cases. In light of the Court of Appeal’s ruling, the order for possession was set aside, and the claim was dismissed.

  • Huzrat v Hounslow LBC [2013] EWCA Civ 1865; [2014] HLR 17 – the Court of Appeal held that the duty enforced by section 11 of the Children Act 2004 to take account of the best interests of children applies to local housing authorities making homelessness decisions.

High Court
  • Sharaky v Clearspring Ready Homes [2022] EWHC 2019 (QB)- Junior Solicitor- the High Court held that an accommodation provider could lawfully evict a former asylum seeker from accommodation that had been provided pursuant to arrangements with a local authority (Kent County Council) without needing to comply with the Protection from Eviction Act (1977) and obtain a possession order. A subsequent, and still ongoing, application to the European Court of Human Rights has been made to challenge the potential incompatibility between section 3A of the Protection from Eviction Act (1977) and Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Right.

  • R(P) v Thames Valley Police [2014] EWHC 1436 (Admin), CO/7905/2012. Assisting principle solicitor. Successful judicial review to remove inappropriate, unsubstantiated, and confused information from a care support worker’s Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (ECRB) certificate (Non Housing)

Interests

  • Football- I have volunteered as an assistant coach to children under 12 in Toronto (Canada), and have helped organise charity football events to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for Bowel Cancer and Children In Need
