Public law solicitor Shalini Patel will be speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Tuesday (9th July) alongside Gemma Lousley from Women for Refugee Women (WFRW). Shalini will be discussing the work she does with victims of trafficking in the detention environment as well as the work WFRW has been carrying out in relation to an increasing number of phone calls from women originally from China who are detained in Yarl’s Wood.
Shalini has been working closely with WFRW on a briefing involving the detention of Chinese women in the UK, which has secured a parliamentary debate scheduled for 2:30pm on the same Tuesday. Shalini has significant expertise in the detention of Chinese women in the UK and is currently representing a Chinese woman who – after several years being exploited as a sex slave – was released from Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre and told to return to the address where she had previously been forced to work in the sex trade. Shalini has also represented a Chinese woman who was unlawfully detained for six months, despite her immigration history displaying clear indicators of trafficking and abuse.
