The council has received the title SEN and Disability Champion 2015/16, awarded by the Anti-Bullying Alliance.
The alliance is a coalition of organisations funded by the Department for Education, who work together to prevent bullying of children and young people.
To win the award, Sefton Council had to show a commitment to stop the bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs (SEND).
Senior programme lead at the Anti-Bullying Alliance, Martha Evans, praised the efforts of Sefton Council:
“We’ve been very pleased to work with Sefton over the last twelve months.
”Sefton schools, children’s workforce staff and the local authority have been working hard to reduce bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs.
”The programme has seen a great improvement in the wellbeing of disabled children and those with SEN in such a short space of time – and we are delighted to call Sefton Council Anti-Bullying Alliance SEN/Disability Champions.”
Head of Schools and Families at Sefton Council, Mike McSorley, added
“Recognition from the Anti-Bullying Alliance – as well as the National Children’s Bureau, Contact a Family and the Council for Disabled Children – is warmly received.
”However, it comes as no surprise to me, knowing as I do the dedication and thorough approach of schools and teams across Sefton Council, who support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”
