A new Gateshead project helping young people at risk has secured extra funding from the Gateshead Community Safety Team.
Gateshead Council says that the Platform Outreach Project (POP) will send outreach workers to particular areas of Gateshead, to engage and work with groups of youths who may be at risk of substance use, anti-social behaviour, hate crime, exploitation and child sexual exploitation.
The work is part of Platform Gateshead – Gateshead’s young people’s substance misuse service.
Project Leader at Platform Gateshead, Faye Codling, has welcomed news of the award:
“We’ve already had significant success at reaching out to young people who are marginalised and disaffected in Gateshead,” said Ms Codling.
“This extra funding from the Gateshead Community Safety Team will allow us to have an even greater impact on the young people of Gateshead.”
The outreach workers will be ready to report any issues of safeguarding that they uncover as part of the project, reporting back to partner agencies to make sure problems are recorded and resolved as quickly as possible.
Gateshead Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Volunteering, which includes Community Safety, Councillor Linda Green, added:
“We are really excited about this new project with Platform – we see it as another way of engaging with, supporting and offering advice to children and young people, while addressing anti-social behaviour concerns.”
