Cambridgeshire mental health app launches on 11 December (18 November 2013)

Duncan Lewis, Mental Health Solicitors, Cambridgeshire mental health app launches on 11 December

Cambridgeshire is to launch a new mental health mobile phone app to offer tips and advice to mental health patients.

The mobile phone app will consist of a traffic light system of red, amber and green lights.

The green button will offer “motivational tips” on mental health management and wellbeing. The amber light will send a text message to two contacts that the user’s mental health condition is deteriorating and they require rapid assistance.

Pressing the red button on the mental health app will act as a crisis button and will send a text to two contacts to tell them the user needs immediate help for their mental health condition – and will also add the user’s precise location.

Users of the mental health app can also take advantage of free tips on managing their condition – and can monitor their moods on a daily basis. Personal data will also be stored on the app, which has been developed by developers 28b and the Sun Network, with support from Cambridgeshire County Council.

The app will be launched in time for the Christmas and New Year period on 11 December.

The holiday season can be especially difficult for some mental health patients, as mental health services may be run on a limited basis over Christmas and New Year, making admission to a secure mental health unit – or seeking counselling for a deteriorating mental health condition – more difficult.

Many people with mental health conditions are isolated and may be separated from their families and friends, which can add to their distress at what is thought of as a time for being with friends and family.
