A 69-year-old scientist is facing a possible jail term after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, following an attack on a taxi driver.
Peter Williamson – a physicist and Fellow of the Royal Institution – launched a verbal attack on taxi driver Kevin Johnson and called him a “f------ c---“ because he thought he was going to miss an opera performance at Holland Park.
The Evening Standard reports that Mr Johnson had picked up Mr Williamson as a fare in Wimbledon on 17 January, but during the journey the scientist had become irate over whether he would miss the Puccini opera. Mr Johnson had then stopped at an ATM machine in Kensington High Street.
Mr Johnson had evicted Mr Williamson from his taxi after he became angry that he was going to be late for the opening of the opera and used abusive language in the cab.
However, when Mr Williamson walked past the ATM machine, Mr Johnson climbed out of his cab to show him where the cash machine was.
It was then that the scientist attacked Mr Johnson physically, using his walking stick. The taxi driver sustained a two-inch wound which needed stitches.
At Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court, Williamson was warned that he may be facing a prison sentence for the assault on Mr Johnson.
Williamson is due to be sentenced on 18 September.
