Children’s charity the NSPCC has said that the number of sex offences committed against children across England and Wales has risen again.

BBC News reports that latest figures from the charity show that there were a total of 31,000 offences recorded by the police in the year up to April 2014, an increase of 8,500 on the previous year’s figure.

Police are now recording 85 new cases of sex offences against children every day.

The figures show there have also been “significant rises” in the number of sex offences committed annually across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The NSPCC's chief executive, Peter Wanless, said that the figures are “a fraction of the true number of victims, because some endure an agonising wait of many years before telling anyone – and others never reveal what has happened to them”.

The charity obtained the data as the result of a Freedom of Information request.

The statistics show that most victims of child sex abuse in 2013-2014 were aged between 12 and 16.

However, a total of 8,282 were aged below 11 – and of those, a total of 2,895 are estimated to be aged five or under, including 94 babies.

There has been a 50% increase in the number of recorded cases of child sex abuse since the year 2008-2009.
