The results of a recent employment study have warned that youngsters across Britain are likely to face a bleak future due to employment “black spots”. The Work Foundation-backed research study highlighted concerns that young people residing in the north of the UK were increasingly likely to be lacking in education, work, and training due to insufficient employment opportunities. The study has called on the Government to increase their investment in towns and cities north of the country.

The study's authors have warned the Government that unless it chooses to acts decisively, entire generations of youngsters will be confined to a life of crime, low income, and low life expectancies in comparison to youngsters across the rest of Britain. Around one million 16 to 24-year-olds are currently out of the education, employment, and training loops, with 186,000 of these individuals aged 16 to 18. The foundation claims that their study has highlighted a serious social problem.

In its study, areas from Liverpool to Hull were found to be among the most concerning in Britain. Grimsby, Doncaster, Wigan, and Warrington were found to have high levels (25 per cent) of young people not in education, employment, or training. Of the youngsters in areas such as Oldham, Blackpool, and Rochdale, in excess of one in five were considered likely to be out of employment, education, and training. The Skills Minister, John Hayes, claimed that the Government was committed to reducing the levels of individuals out of employment, training, or education by increasing Access to Apprenticeships programmes.
