Nottingham City Council is to begin work on a Cycle Superhighway today (19/10/15), to help reduce the risk of injury to cyclists in the city.

The Nottingham Cycle City Ambition Programme (NCCAP) is funded by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – which approved the £6.1 million funding for the Cycle Superhighway on 15 October 2015.

The Western Corridor is one of the new routes to be delivered by the NCCAP, linking the city centre to Woodside Road in Lenton. The council says that during construction, it will be necessary to close the Castle Boulevard cycle path until the Western Corridor’s completion in April 2016. Cyclists are being advised to use the road or find an alternative route on Nottingham’s cycling website.

Nottingham City Council is also preparing a cycle route design guide to show how cycling facilities will be designed over the coming year, and is inviting looking for the views on the guide from cyclists, cycle organisations and all road users. The draft Nottingham Cycle Design Guide is online and comments should be submitted by 31 October 2015.

The draft guide is based on the Sustrans National Cycle Design Guide, but includes extra sections to deal with issues that arise specifically in Nottingham, such as bikes and trams. It is hoped that the guide will raise national design standards.

The council says that Nottingham’s first cycle superhighway will comprise a high quality surface that gives a smooth ride – with signals that prioritise cyclists. The superhighway will be segregated from other traffic, to improve speed and safety for cyclists.

Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport, Councillor Nick McDonald, said:

“The start of the cycle superhighway roadworks is a really exciting development for the city.

“The route links up the University of Nottingham to the city centre. We know it will prove to be popular with commuters and leisure cyclists – and provides a real showcase to demonstrate how high we are setting our standards for Nottingham’s cycling future.

“Unfortunately, during the works, it will be necessary to introduce temporary traffic measures that will cause localised restrictions. We will tell residents in advance when works are happening and apologise for any inconvenience that the works cause.”

Work to build Nottingham’s new cycle superhighway starts on Monday, 19 October and will be completed by 29 April 2016.

According to ROSPA, every year across the UK, around 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents – including around 3,000 who are killed or seriously injured. The figures exclude cyclists who do not report incidents to the police – and accidents that take place away from the road.
