Herefordshire’s 2gether NHS Foundation Trust is calling for local communities to become “winter friends” to lonely friends and relatives in an initiative to help prevent people suffering from loneliness from falling into depression and suffering mental health problems.

The Mental Health Foundation estimates that four in 10 people feel depressed as a result of loneliness in the UK – and this feeling can be worse in winter.

Chronic loneliness has been linked to a weaker immune system and poorer cardiovascular health – and people who feel lonely may also find it harder to control habit-forming behaviour or their general behaviour.

The 2gether NHS Foundation Trust is aiming to get 100,000 people across Herefordshire to make sure they stay in touch and support friends and relatives who may be alone or feeling lonely – including the elderly.

Elderly people who live alone or who feel lonely may not venture out in colder weather as frequently as they do in the warmer months, which can increase feelings of isolation.

People can sign up the NHS Winter Friends pledge online and the campaign will issue cold weather alerts to warn participants that lonely relatives or friends may need more support if they cannot get out.

The Winter Friends campaign will also send email tips to participants on how they can help friends and relatives who are lonely or isolated avoid mental health problems such as depression.
