A woman from Truro in Cornwall who was overpaid £1,000 in Council Tax Support after she falsified payslips has been prosecuted for benefit fraud.
At Truro Magistrates Court on 6 January, Maxine Roberts, 36, of Lowen Bre in Truro pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud under the Fraud Act 2006.
The court heard that Roberts had created and presented false payslips on two separate occasions over a period of two years, which did not reflect her true earnings.
As a result, she received more than £1,000 in Council Tax Support that she was not entitled to.
Roberts was fined £250 and was ordered to pay the council's full costs of more than £1,500 – including the cost of investigating and bringing the case to court – as well as a victim surcharge of £25.
Cornwall Council is recovering the overpaid Council Tax Support from Roberts.
