The City of London Police fraud squad has arrested an investment banker in a police operation which targeted 20 people suspected of making bogus insurance claims worth thousands of pounds.

The 36-year-old banker was arrested at an address in Dagenham on suspicion of filing two fraudulent insurance claims totalling £60,000, the Evening Standard newspaper reports.

The banker arrested allegedly claimed that he had been the victim of two burglaries in two years, with thieves stealing television sets, diamonds and cash totalling £37,000, which he claimed was held in a safe at his home.

Police raided the property and seized bank documents, as well as electrical equipment and laptop computers.

A further 19 addresses were raided across Britain by City of London Police – nine people were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation involving insurance claims totalling £450,000.

Head of City of London Police fraud squad DCI Dave Wood said:

“It’s disappointing how easy people think it is – and think it’s worth a try.

“We all end up paying for them through our insurance policies.

“The Association of British Insurers says it’s around £50 added to every policy to account for fraud.”
