An officer worker from Cardiff has found two poisonous spiders in a bunch of grapes she bought from the local Co-op supermarket.
The International Business Times reports that Nichole Sarra, 28, bought the grapes at lunchtime and took them back to her office, where a false widow spider crawled out after she had opened the grapes on her desk.
Ms Sarra said when she opened the bag, the bag appeared to consist mainly of “dust and cobwebs”.
However, she spotted something scuttling out of the bag. Her colleagues took photos of it and identified it as a false widow spider. There was another dead spider inside the bag.
Ms Sarra then contacted the Co-op’s customer services department.
“I was told to go back to the grapes and get the barcode number for them so they could track it – they believed it came from Spain,” she said.
The species of spider was confirmed as a black widow by the British Arachnological Society – who said the female was more likely to bite than the male, but that the spiders were usually not dangerous unless provoked.
Treatment for a false widow spider bite involves hospitalisation and antibiotics – however, a British man who was bitten by five spiders in his garden shed ended up nearly losing his leg as a result.
False widows are found in the UK, but the Natural History Museum said that as yet no one has died as a result of having been bitten by one.
