Warwickshire County Council has launched a new suicide prevention strategy to combat the number of deaths from suicide across the county.

In 2013 and 2014, Warwickshire Coroners recorded 105 cases of death by suicide – a total of 51 people were killed in road accidents in Warwickshire during the same time period.

Deaths from suicide are now the leading cause of death for males in three age groups – five to 19 years, 20 to 34 years and 34 to 49 years.

The new Suicide Prevention Strategy for Warwickshire regards every death by suicide as potentially preventable – and outlines plans and priorities required to reduce the number of deaths by suicide across the county.

Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health, Councillor Les Caborn, said:

“Every death by suicide is a tragedy and impacts families, friends and the wider community.

“This strategy affirms the council’s commitment to working with our partners to reduce the rates and provide better support for those bereaved.”

Warwickshire County Council’s Chair of the Adults, Social Care and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Cllr Alan Webb, added:

“Death by suicide is everybody’s business and we all have a role to play in achieving the zero suicide target set out in the strategy. ”
