A court has heard how a millionaire business was caught trying to shoplift £200 worth of meat from a branch of Tesco.

Metro newspaper reports that 39-year-old Ronan Ghosh – who runs RG Recycling, which has a £16 million annual turnover – was challenged by security officers as he tried to leave the store with the meat hidden inside a bag on 21 February.

Birmingham Crown Court heard that Ghosh – from Solihull in the West Midlands – told security officers that he had just had a row with his girlfriend. He also said that his mother had just been diagnosed with skin cancer – and that there was a will being discussed in the family, which had placed him under “considerable strain”.

Ghosh’s defence lawyer told the court:

“It beggars belief as to why he finds himself in this court – he accepts full responsibility for what he did.”

Ghosh pleaded guilty to theft and was given a 12-month community order with 80 hours unpaid community work.

Ghosh was also ordered to pay £575 in court costs.
