Michael Adebolajo, 29, who was found guilty of the killing of Fusilier Lee Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks last May, is to appeal against his conviction.
Lee Rigby’s killers are expected to receive whole-life sentences, meaning they would not be entitled to a sentence review.
Adebolajo and his co-defendant, 22-year-old Michael Adebowale, were convicted at the Old Bailey last month after jurors sat through graphic video footage of the brutal killing.
The death of Fusilier Lee Rigby by the two men involved an unprovoked attack on the defenceless soldier, who was mown down by a car and then killed using a machete and an assortment of knives which Adebolajo an Adebowale had taken with them. Adebowale had taken a gun with him and injured his hand when he fired the weapon – he and Adebolajo were also shot after armed police opened fire.
Jurors at the Old Bailey trial heard how both men considered soldiers a legitimate target in response to Britain’s foreign policy in Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. The two men described themselves as “soldiers of Allah”, but jurors were instructed that this was not a defence for the charges against them.
The men were however cleared of the attempted murder of a police officer.
The pair were due to be sentenced after a key Appeal Court hearing over whole-life sentencing. A date has not been set for judgment following the hearing last week. Mr Justice Sweeney said he would sentence both men after the Appeal Court hearing.
