Online footage has emerged of the moment two children in Florida were dragged from a swimming pool by their father, after they suffered an electric shock in the water.
The CCTV footage was taken at a holiday apartment block’s swimming pool and shows the moment a young girl touches the metal handrail by the pool and freezes as the shock takes hold.
The girl’s father realises that something is wrong, but as he pulls her to safety he too receives an electric shock.
Other bathers realise that there is something wrong and are seen fleeing from the pool – however, a second young girl is left still holding the metal handrail in a state of shock. Her grandfather enters the pool to drag her to safety, but he also receives an electric shock and falls onto the pool decking.
A young boy also receives an electric shock from the pool – all three children were taken to hospital and released, reports TV network WFOR-TV.
The incidents took place in April and have been traced to unconnected wiring in the swimming pool’s pump house.
Swimming pool accidents are some of the most common holiday accidents – and poorly maintained swimming pools can not only cause electric shocks and injuries from incidents like slips and trips, but can also lead to serious bacterial and parasitic infections being transmitted to bathers.
The parasitic infection Cryptosporidium – known as the swimming pool infection – can occur if pools are not disinfected properly or regularly and bathers ingest faecal matter left by other pool users, children wearing soiled nappies or swimsuits, or animals who have entered the pool.
Hotel swimming pools should be inspected by tour operators to make sure that standards of hygiene and health and safety comply with standards in the UK.
