E.coli Outbreak at Bangor Nursery (22 November 2011)

Date: 22/11/2011
Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, E.coli Outbreak at Bangor Nursery

A Bangor nursery has been hit by an outbreak of E.coli. One of the children attending the Bangor University-operated Tir Na Nog Nursery was diagnosed as being infected with E.coli, as has an adult associated with the premises. Four other individuals have fallen ill and are currently being tested, in addition to the other well children who attend the 50-place nursery. The nursery has been closed temporarily as a precaution. Nursery staff, in addition to those deemed ‘at-risk’ who have been in close contact with the sick, will also undergo testing.

Public Health Wales claimed that they were investigating links with an outbreak at an Amlwch-based nursery in which eight cases of individuals infected with E.coli were confirmed. The source of E.coli at this nursery remains unknown. Dr. Chris Whiteside, a Public Health Wales consultant in communicable disease control, claimed that the organisation had launched an investigation in collaboration with the local authorities and added that possible links to the Amlwch nursery E.coli O157 outbreak in October were being investigated.

E.coli O157 can spread with ease in nurseries and schools. E.coli O157 is found in contaminated food and water and can be passed on through contact with those infected with the disease. E.coli can also be contracted from infected farm animals. The symptoms of infection can range from mild diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps to severe, bloody diarrhoea.

Duncan Lewis’ personal injury solicitors may be able to attain compensation for children’s injuries and incidents in places of work. The team can instigate claims for general and special damages and seek to obtain maximum compensation as swiftly as possible.
