A father who got so drunk that he lost his baby has been branded “disgraceful” by a Hull Crown Court judge. Christopher Dixon had been celebrating his forthcoming wedding on the night that he lost his baby daughter and he was so hung-over that he failed to realise his mistake until nine hours afterwards. Mr. Dixon, aged 34, wept in court upon admitting child cruelty. Judge Michael Mettyear described Mr. Dixon as “irresponsible”.
The court was informed that Mr. Dixon had left his daughter in her pram on his way home after drinking 12 bottles of lager. Upon waking, he had assumed that he had left the baby in the care of his friend and only discovered the extent of his actions when he went to his friend’s house to collect the baby. Mr. Dixon’s 17-month-old daughter was found in her pushchair by teenager Joel Redhead. Mr. Redhead promptly informed police of his find. Upon being contacted by police officers, Mr. Dixon begged them not to inform his fiancée that he had lost the baby.
Mr. Dixon was handed a six-month jail term, suspended for a period of two years, and was ordered to conduct 150 hours’ unpaid work. He was also ordered to meet the cost of fines and court costs, totalling £1,500. Mr. Dixon and his fiancée have been ordered by the authorities to reside in separate accommodation until they have met with the couple. The baby is currently under a social services child protection plan.
