Newcastle Crown Court has jailed a fraudster who made 1,000 applications to the NHS to become a doctor, using a bogus CV.

Bai Bai Ahmed Kabia, aged 46, from South Shields in Tyne and Wear was described by the judge as having shown “breathtaking arrogance”, after he was found guilty of 12 charges of fraud and jailed for 15 months.

The court heard that Kabia exaggerated his qualifications and his career history in applications for jobs as a doctor with the NHS.

BBC News reports that Kabia studied medicine in Russia and then trained as a podiatrist when he moved to the UK in 1994.

However, his lies included claiming to be a member of the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), as well as claiming to hold an MSc qualification from University College London.

The alarm was raised in 2013, after Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust interviewed him for a post as a doctor. The trust contacted the body which deals with crime in the health service, NHS Protect – which then requested from other trusts copies of applications Kabia had made for jobs as a doctor.

A counter-fraud specialist with NHS Protect said that, had any of Kabia’s applications been successful, he would have had direct access to patients.

NHS Protect’s Dave Horsley said:

“Dr Kabia submitted job applications that he knew to be false, trying to deceive his potential employers.

"The custodial sentence reflects the seriousness of these offences and will serve as a powerful deterrent to others."
