Denbighshire Council embarks on £1.1m social housing refurbishment (7 June 2016)

Denbighshire County Council is to invest more than £1 million refurbishing social housing flats in Prestatyn.
The £1.1m refurbishment project marks the beginning of a 28-week contract, which will see a total of 33 units located across four blocks of homes improved internally and externally by November 2016.
The flats were originally built in the 1960s and the flats will be updated internally and externally, with roof insulation, new glazed panels to replace the old balustrades, new render to the exterior and grey aluminium double- glazing.
Lead Member for Modernisation and Housing, Councillor Barbara Smith, said:
“Due to the previous investment of the 2008 Welsh Housing Quality Standard improvement programme, it was decided that the buildings could be repaired and modernised far more cost effectively than rebuilding on the existing site.
“The size and existing internal layout of the apartments are suitable for local demand – and investing in the stock now will ensure they remain sustainable for the foreseeable future.”
The council will also crate patio areas with raised beds, to enhance the community feel and to enable the residents to sit outside.
An area will also be created to keep the recycling bins in one place.
Cllr Smith added:
“Environmental improvements of this nature are essential to ensure that residents retain a sense of pride in their area.”
