A criminal gang spent six months digging a tunnel underneath a Manchester shopping centre to steal money from a cash machine, it has been revealed. Police believe that the gang were local to the area and have been left astonished by the gang’s determination. The gang were found to have dug a 100-foot long tunnel beneath a shop where the cash machine was sited yet only managed to walk away with £6,000 in cash, an amount that has been dismissed as “pocket-change” by the investigating officers. It is likely that the gang lost money, given the amount of time and effort they put into building their tunnel. Police believe that specialist equipment would have been hired to carry out such extensive work.

Police claim that the cash machine theft, which occurred outside of the Blockbuster store based at the Fallowfield shopping precinct, took place between 05:30 p.m. on January the 2nd and the morning of January the 3rd. The gang had supported their four foot-high tunnel with scaffolding. They had wired the tunnel up to a nearby electricity grid, granting them the lighting they required to carry out the theft. An entrance to the tunnel had been cut into a local railway embankment. The tunnel led underneath a car park to reach the shopping precinct. Police are yet to learn of the way in which the gang disposed of the earth that they moved while creating the tunnel. Detective Sergeant Ian Shore, of Longsight CID, claims to have never seen anything so elaborate in his time in service.
