A married couple from Peterborough have been evicted from their home by a local housing association for growing cannabis and consistent anti-social behaviour.

Sixty-nine-year-old Peter Betts and 59-year-old Marlene Betts were caught cultivating the class C substance during a police search last year. Officers found two designated bedrooms being used to grow the illegal drug during the raid, which would have carried a high street value in excess of £4,000.

Cross Keys Homes has now gained an eviction order against the pair despite claims that they knew nothing about the operation after their daughter came forward to take responsibility for the crime. That theory was debunked by evidence given by police, which included the strength of smell and heat in the property.

Cross Keys Homes' Anti-Social Behaviour Manager, Gemma Wood thanked the police for its efforts. She said: “Not only did Mr and Mrs Betts allow their home to be used for an illegal and immoral purpose; the use of such high voltage lamps in residential premises is an extreme fire risk and puts the lives of others at risk and all for their own personal gain.”

Mr and Mrs Betts were evicted from the property last week after showing little remorse for their actions that resulted in a serious breach of their tenancy agreement.
