Child’s eye cancer missed three times by medics (19 September 2014)

The parents of a baby whose eye cancer was missed by health professionals on three occasions have spoken out to warn other parents to keep pushing for answers where their children’s health is concerned.
London newspaper the Evening Standard reports that Oana Visan, 24, from Lewisham in southeast London first took her five-month-old daughter to the doctor over concerns about her vision.
She was told there was nothing wrong with Ayana’s sight, but Ms Visan asked a health visitor two months later if there was anything wrong with the little girl’s vision. The health visitor told her everything was “fine”.
At nine months’ old, Ayana’s eye changed colour and Ms Visan and Ayana’s father Dragos Catanitiou, 29, took the little girl to St Thomas’ Hospital. A nurse at the hospital told her not to worry, however. The couple then asked to see a doctor at the hospital.
When the doctor at St Thomas’ ran tests, Ayana was diagnosed with the eye cancer retinoblastoma in December 2012.
The little girl underwent surgery to remove her eye and has been fitted with a glass eye. She is now in good health, says her mother.
However, Ms Visan is warning other parents not to accept reassurances from health professionals if they feel something is wrong with their child’s health.
“Keep pushing until you get answers,” she said.
St Thomas’ Hospital told the Evening Standard that it was unable to comment on individual cases.
