The killer of schoolgirl April Jones has been refused compensation, after he was slashed across the face by another prisoner and scarred for life.
WalesOnline reports that former slaughterhouse worker Mark Bridger, 48, applied for compensation from the Ministry of Justice after he was attacked while being held at HMP Wakefield.
Bridger had abducted five-year-old April from her home village Machynlleth in Powys in October 2012. Her body has never been found.
Bridger – himself the father of six children – was convicted of her murder at Mold Crown Court in May 2013 and was given a whole life sentence, meaning he will most likely die in jail.
He was sent to high security jail HMP Wakefield – which houses some of the UK’s most dangerous murderers and paedophiles.
He was attacked by 22-year-old convicted murderer Juvinai Ferreira – who improvised a home-made weapon to attack Bridger.
Bridger needed hospital treatment for the wound inflicted and demanded to be moved from HMP Wakefield – as well as thousands of pounds in compensation for the prison assault.
At one time it was thought he might receive more for his injuries in prison than the parents of April Jones received from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme for the loss of their daughter.
However, the Ministry of Justice has rejected Bridger’s claim, as well as his request that he be moved to a safer prison.
