Business Secretary Vince Cable has highlighted the potential positive impact of a new flux of immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria in the New Year after insisting that a cap on European Union migrants will not happen.

Mr Cable accused the coalition government of panicking about the situation and suggested that the 75,000 cap is both illegal and impossible to implement. He also added that the evidence suggests that people arriving from Eastern Europe will provide more to the economy than they take in benefits.

“The responsibility of politicians in this situation is to look at the facts and the simple point is that there's very little evidence of benefit tourism,” Mr Cable said on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show.

Ionuty Dumitru Tamas is just one of the educated Romanians hoping to get a job when he arrives in the UK in January. The 23-year-old bartender has already sorted his accommodation and is hopeful that his stay will lead to higher education and improved long-term prospects.

Tamas said: “It's the right time to go, when I am young, and want to move out of home. I have always wanted to go to university, and if I earn money in the UK and everything works out, I would love to study there eventually.”
