A&E targets missed 24 weeks consecutively (23 March 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, A&E targets missed 24 weeks consecutively

New figures from NHS England have shown that target waiting times for A&E patients have fallen to below the minimum level of 95% of patients seen within fours hours for the 24th consecutive week.

A&E departments are now on course for failing to meet targets for nearly six months – with only 93.3% of patients being seen within the four-hour target time from arrival at A&E to discharge, referral, transfer or admission to a hospital ward in the week to 15 March.

The figure is a slight improvement on the previous week’s figure of 92.8% of patients being treated at A&E units within four hours.

Delays in A&E have recently been some of the longest in recent years – closure of mental health units and problems with NHS patients accessing GP care have been blamed for the rise in A&E attendances.

This year’s flu vaccine was also found not to work, meaning more elderly and vulnerable patients being treated in A&E.

The Department of Health has confirmed that A&E departments have failed to meet their targets for every week during the winter months. Peak numbers attended A&E units before Christmas, but figures for attendances to 15 March fell to 434,100 from 434,800 the previous week.
