A couple from Stockton have been offered compensation by holiday giant Thomson, after falling ill on a Thomson cruise.

Local online publisher GazetteLive reports that John and Sheila Randall booked a package holiday with Thomson Cruises, but Sheila, 61, fell ill with symptoms of holiday food poisoning on the second day of the cruise.

Mrs Randall suffered from fever and sickness and diarrhoea onboard the Thomson Dream cruise liner.

Other passengers also suffered from similar symptoms and have been offered compensation for cruises taken between November and December 2011.

Mr and Mrs Randall booked their package holiday cruise for January 2011 – and Mr Randall, 63, says he witnessed lapses in hygiene onboard the cruise ship, including food being re-used at different meal times.

Leftover food can develop or harbour dangerous infections such as Salmonella, E.coli and Campylobacter, especially if food is not stored properly or is not heated to the correct temperature – or is left out at ambient temperature when it needs to be chilled.

In holiday hotels and on board cruise ships, gastrointestinal infections can soon spread if dining rooms surfaces and public lavatories are not kept spotless.

Gastric infections can also be spread by catering staff and passengers not washing their hands after using lavatories – or if crockery, drinking cups and glasses, or cutlery are not washed correctly in hot, soapy water.

Thomson declined to comment on the compensation awarded to holidaymakers, saying it did not discuss “settlements”.

Mr Randall said:

“Never in a million years will I travel with Thomson Cruises again. Our holiday was ruined – and nothing like the luxurious break we expected.

“We’re pleased Thomson has now settled the case.”
