Victims of nuclear tests which took place in the 1960s are still waiting for a share of £25 million compensation.
The Mirror reports that veterans who took part in the tests unaware of the risks involved in the test launch of a nuclear bomb went on to have children with birth defects.
A total of 22,000 British troops were sent to the South Pacific to witness the tests and help clear debris afterwards, unaware of the dangers of radioactive material released after the explosion by the bombs and the detonators used.
Recent research has estimated the partners of servicemen involved in the tests had a 50% increased risk for miscarriages and stillborn children as a result – and the children of servicemen who witnessed nuclear tests had 16 times the normal rate of birth defects.
The research by the British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association also shows that 36% of veterans involved in the tests have reported birth defects in their children – the national average for birth defects is 2.2%.
In the grandchildren and great grandchildren of veterans involved in nuclear testing, the averages for birth defects are 20% and 13%.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister David Cameron said he would consider establishing a £25m fund to help servicemen who survived the tests and families whose children have been affected.
MP John Baron met with David Cameron on behalf of the association and said:
“Given the veterans’ unique service, we owe them.”
The children of veterans have been born with a range of rare genetic mutations, including stunted growth and deformed limbs, as well as curvature of the spine and kidney conditions.
The veterans themselves went on to suffer poor health and premature death in many cases.
