Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Deepcut inquest opens

The inquest into the death of Private Cheryl James will begin at 2pm on Monday 1 February.

Pte James died of a gunshot wound at Princess Royal Barracks, Deepcut in Surrey in 1995.

In 2014, the High Court ruled that the inquest into the soldier’s death held on 21 December 1995 should be quashed and a fresh inquest held.

The inquest will be conducted by His Honour Brian Barker QC and will be held at HM Coroner’s Court, Station Approach, Woking in Surrey.

The family of Pte James campaigned for 19 years for a fresh inquest into her death.

Surrey Police investigated her death and three other unexplained deaths at Deepcut Barracks – Pte Sean Benton, Pte Geoff Gray, and Pte James Collinson also died from gunshot wounds.

Surrey Police said they did not find sufficient evidence to prosecute any of the cases.
